Bergamot and parfums

Bergamot has a rich history in the world of perfumery. Its use dates back to the 17th century, where it was a key component of the original Eau de Cologne developed by J.M. Farina in Germany. The fruit’s essential oil is prized for its unique, fresh, and uplifting scent, which has made it a staple in many fragrance compositions. Bergamot is commonly used in skincare products for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a versatile ingredient in the beauty industry.

One theory suggests that the name “bergamot” originated from the Italian word “bergomotta,” closely tied to the town of Bergamo in Italy. However there are also references to the Turkish word ''beg-armudi'' meaning ''prince's pear'' or ''prince of pears'' which could be another origin of the name.  

Bergamot is primarily grown in southern Calabria in Italy, where over 80% of the essential oil is produced. It's also cultivated in southern France and Cote d'Ivoire for the oil, and in southern Turkey for marmalade. The oil is extracted by zesting the rind of the fruit, which is the size of an orange with a yellow-green colour similar to a lemon.  Bergamot essential oil is known for its unique citrusy scent with floral undertones, making it a popular ingredient in perfumes and aromatherapy products.

Bergamot's scent is fruity-sweet with mild spicy hints, and it's often encountered as a top note in various compositions.   Bergamot oil is highly sought after in perfumery due to its unique ability to harmonize different notes and create a cohesive scent profile. It is a staple ingredient in modern perfumes, particularly in the chypre and fougere categories.

The use of bergamot in perfumes has not only been for its scent but also for its therapeutic properties. Bergamot essential oil is a popular choice in aromatherapy for its ability to alleviate symptoms of depression and provide relief from stress-induced anxiety and pain.
